Community Facilities, Projects & Other Work |
Since being elected I’ve worked consistently to deliver community facilities, and support a multitude of community activities and of course advocate for individuals in the Western Ward. Since Onslow and Western Ward combined in 2004 it’s been my pleasure to work for the combined ward in the same way. I love working with people in our community to get things done that make a better city for us all. Community facilities value is that they provide places for us as people to meet, to play, read, eat, or otherwise enjoy. |

About Andy |
I’ve set out some of the things I’d like to achieve, and some that I have already played a leading role, or often the lead role in making happen. I am proud to have made a big difference in our communities and to know that they are better places for that. Looking Forward Community improvements I want to help deliver. Karori Sanctuary – Complete Visitor Centre. Key is making sure we tell the stories and provide the information to visitors that they want. Working with Positively Wellington Tourism to market the Sanctuary internationally as part of a city ecotourism cluster. Khandallah Village and Town Hall – upgrading the Town Hall to incorporate the community centre. Beautifying the village in consultation with the community. Karori Town Centre – landscaping work around the outside of Mobil station is about to start. I also want to improve landscaping of the square in front of the library-café. Karori Hall – Working hard with the community to fundraise for a new purpose built community hall. Karori – resolving the future for the St Johns site Karori Park – improvements to drainage, children’s mountain bike area in the Pines, ongoing revegetation, picnic area, supporting Rotary/Medical Centre plans for a fitness trail, organising and delivering events at the Park, Karori – playground upgrade at Benburn Park. I’ve also suggested a new playground for Karori East which is one of the few areas in the city that doesn’t meet our policy of a playground within 600-800 metres of residences. My proposal is a new playground on top of the Messines Road Reservoir following the reservoir’s rebuilding in the next 2-3 years Wadestown – support for Village Green work Wadestown – upgrading Fort Buckley’s access and vegetation Wadestown – resolving aspirations for community meeting spaces attached to the library. Ngaio – protecting the precious Huntleigh Park bush Ngaio – securing Crows Nest and adding it to the Outer Green Belt Trellisick Park – working with On Track to allow weed pest control on their land Kaiwharawhara Stream – Deliver track from Sanctuary to the Sea. Wilton – improving the visitor centre at Otari – Wilton’s Bush Northland – resolving leaks and dampness in the Northland Community Centre. Northland – playground upgrade planned for Creswick Terrace. I want to maximise community engagement, and hopefully achieve additional funding to give optimal result I Deliver ! In 1995 I organised a visioning consultation done by myself and several Karori residents. We asked people what they liked about Karori, and what its strengths and weaknesses were. People thought community facilities were very very lacking. We had an aging outdoor pool with declining use (below 30,000 per annum), an under-used community hall, two poor quality supermarkets, and a somewhat struggling retail sector. Our library was very busy, but very small. There was one limited café in Karori Mall. The community centre ran from the old church buildings on the corner of Karori Road and Campbell St. From that I developed a vision built around delivering quality community facilities that would draw people to the ‘heart of Karori’ so that it became a place to come to, enjoy being, and to meet people, in short the heart of our community. Then the hard work started !
